Did you know? There are so many ways to process cork

The cork here refers to the bark of cork oak (foreign called oak), because its texture is light and soft, so commonly known as cork. Cork oak is one of the world’s oldest surviving tree species, but also the most valuable green renewable resources.

As the saying goes: “the tree is afraid of peeling bark”, ordinary trees in the peeling off of the bark, due to the inability to draw nutrients from the roots, will soon die, but the cork tree can be regularly peeled bark, usually more than 20 years of softwood timber can be peeled for the first time, after every 10 to 20 years can be peeled again to use, is an excellent renewable environmental protection materials.

Most of the world’s existing cork resources are concentrated in the Mediterranean coastal area, of which Portugal is the most abundant and the best quality. In China’s Qinling belt also has this kind of tree transplants, although they are the same latitude, but due to the soil and climate, the thickness of the bark is far less than the Mediterranean coast, especially the basic properties of the bark is very different, in terms of elasticity, toughness, color and purity are inferior to the Portuguese cork material.

All processing methods of cork materials

At present, there are five main processing methods of cork, namely splicing method, whole cut method, veneer wrapping method, cork bending and folding plus method and bending method, the following is a specific description of each processing method of practice.

Splicing method

Multiple cork pieces are spliced in a way that is perpendicular to the direction of the bend, and the splicing is artificially staggered to produce curvature. This method can produce any curvature, and structural stability, the problem is that this method is a waste of material, and the splicing will inevitably produce unevenness, affecting the feeling of use.

Whole piece cutting method

Cut out a piece of cork cork shape, without the use of any splicing and structure, because of the light weight of cork, the volume of raw materials can be customized to allow the use of this method, physical and sitting is also very comfortable, the weight-bearing capacity is also very high, but the cost of cork and processing equipment used is very high, not the average family can afford.

Veneer wrapping method

Similar to the sofa cover, the use of very thin pieces of cork as a veneer material, it will be attached to the hard sheet, because the material thickness is small, can be bent at any angle, and bonded seams can make the effect of sofa stitching.

Cork bending and folding addition method

Thicker cork will break if bent at a large angle, but the thickness of small cork cut thin bending angle can be increased, multiple pieces of such cork bending and superimposed can also make this effect. However, this method uses multiple layers of glue, the glue will harden after drying out, and multiple layers of glue will make the cork body lose its elasticity and lose its own characteristics.

Bending method

Bend the cork to the limit of deformation and then fixed, the whole piece of cork as a sitting board and armrests. And in the weight-bearing areas with multiple layers of waiting cork to increase its strength, in the lower part of the structural members to support. The disadvantage of this approach is that the use of too much cork material, and a whole piece, some places such as the armrest part is wobbly, the backrest part is also the same, very uncomfortable to sit.

Cork materials are comfortable and soft, diverse shapes, highlighting the irreplaceable superiority of other materials, more importantly, cork materials made of home products in line with the concept of green design, cork bark renewable, to do “zero loss of wood resources”, cork home products special production process, can eliminate the solid wood furniture spray paint and other processes, can do zero release of toxic gases.
